It is with sadness and a sense of loss that the Royal Asiatic Society Sri Lanka RASSL announces the demise of its Honorary Treasurer Mr Gaston Perera. Mr Perera had been a writer of historical fiction when he joined the Portuguese Encounter Group of the RASSL. His historical novels and short stories were The Rebel of Kandy (1999), Indian Security Concerns and Other Historical tales (2000) and Sons of the Rebel (2005). As a member of the Portuguese Encounter Group, he entered a process of documenting the Portuguese presence in Sri Lanka, aided by the insights he had from his fictional works. The outcome was two books on the Portuguese period: Kandy Fights the Portuguese: A Military History of Kandyan Resistance (2007) and The Portuguese Missionary in16th and 17th Century Ceylon: The Spiritual Conquest (2009); for the latter, he won a national award. Unknown to many, he had been ailing from diabetes, and had a stroke a couple of months ago. The immediate cause of his death was the result of two massive heart attacks. His body will lie in his home No. 111 Isipathana Mawatha, Colombo 5 from 10 AM Sunday, January 23. His cremation will be held on Monday 24th at 4 PM at the Kanatte cemetery. The RASSL requests its members and well-wishers to pay their last respect to him.

RAS Ramayana Trail Symposium(සිංහලෙන්)

In the formation of Sri Lankan identity are the two narratives of the coming of the Buddha and the coming of Vijaya to this country. There are no archaeologically datable remains for these narratives. Yet the same, Sinhalese speak a North Indian dialect, and Buddhism, at least from the 3rd century BC, has been the defining cultural influence on the country. In contrast to these well-established narratives, a new completely artificial one is now being imposed on Sri Lanka by the tourist authorities. This is a spurious invention of a “Ramayana Trail” targetting a small segment of Indian travelers, mostly of Hindu fundamentalists. Indian academics and scientists refute the Ramayana story as having no historical basis. Indian tourist authorities have no “Ramayana Trail” of its own, but has a “Buddhist Circuit” of historical Buddhist sites.

Several months ago, the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka (RASSL) had an internal workshop of experts on “Ramayana and Archaeology” which came to the conclusion that the sites being marketed by the tourist authorities were not genuine and had severe potential security concerns for the country like the invention of the false “Traditional Homelands of the Tamils”. Afterwards, the RASSL wrote to the tourist authorities asking them to send their “experts” to address a closed workshop of the RASSL. Unfortunately they did not attend.

The Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka is now organising a symposium to bring attention of the public, to the invention of a new history which has potential for the territorial integrity of the country.

The Symposium on Saturday 17th July is at 8:30 a. m.-12.30 p.m. at the Mahaweli Centre.
