ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දේශපාලන ඉතිහාසයේ බිහි වූ විශිෂ්ටතම භාෂා සාහිත්‍ය පඬිවරයා වන්නේ ශ්‍රීමත් ඩී. බී. ජයතිලක (1868 – 1944) ය. ලංකාවේ දේශපාලනය හා බෞද්ධ අධ්‍යාපනය යන අංශවල කැපී පෙනුණු ඔහු සිංහල භාෂා සාහිත්‍යයේ වර්ධනය උදෙසා ඉටු කළ මෙහෙවර විශේෂ අවධානයට ලක් විය යුතු මාතෘකාවකි. පුරාතන සාහිත්‍යයට අයත් පතපොත ශුද්ධ කොට පළ කරවීම, සිංහල ශබ්දකෝෂ සම්පාදන කාර්යය සඳහා පුරෝගාමි වීම, ශාස්ත්‍රීය සමිති සමාගම් හා වාද විවාදවලට සම්බන්ධ වෙමින් ශාස්ත්‍ර ප්‍රබෝධයට දායක වීම ඒ අතර වැදගත් වේ. සිංහල භාෂා සාහිත්‍යය නව යුගයකට පත් වෙමින් පැවති අවදියක දි පිරිවෙන් උගතුන්ගෙන් ද රජයෙන් ද උපකාර ලබා ගැනීමට ඩී. බී. ජයතිලක සමත් විය. ඔහු සම්පාදනය කළ කෘති සිංහල භාෂා සාහිත්‍යය සම්බන්ධයෙන් පසුකාලීන ව සිදු වුණු පර්යේෂණ, අධ්‍යයන සඳහා මහත් සේ ප‍්‍රයෝජනවත් විය. දේශපාලනික, ආගමික හා ශාස්ත්‍රීය අංශවලින් ඩී. බී. ජයතිලක භූමිකාව විමර්ශනය කෙරෙන ග්‍රන්ථයක් සම්පාදනය කිරීමේ අවශ්‍යතාවත් සිංහල භාෂා සාහිත්‍යයේ අභිවර්ධනය උදෙසා එතුමාගේ දායක්ත්වය යළි විමසා බැලීමේ වැදගත්කමත් මේ දේශනයේ දි අවධාරණය කෙරේ.

Sir D. B. Jayatilaka (1968 – 1944) is the foremost Sinhala scholar in the political history of Sri Lanka. He distinguished himself in the fields of politics and Buddhist education in colonial Sri Lanka, and his mission for developing Sinhala language literature deserves special attention. As a scholar, he engaged in editing Sinhala classical works, pioneered the work of Sinhala lexicographical work, and contributed to the revival of scholarship by giving leadership to academic societies and debates. At a time when Sinhala language literature was entering a new era, D. B. Jayatilaka sought help from both Pirivena scholars and the government. The literary works compiled by Jayatilaka paved the way for later research and studies in the field of classical Sinhala language literature. This lecture emphasizes the need to compile a scholarly volume investigating the role of D.B.Jayatilaka in political, religious and academic fields and the importance of re-examining his contribution to the advancement of Sinhala studies.
